Our Roy Estate Mr. Evans demonstrates the heights achieved by the artful blending of select lots of our Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller, precisely tuned additions of other Bordeaux varietals also grown on the property. This single vineyard, estate grown Mr. Evans, produced in limited quantities of 400 to 750 cases, is a wine of striking complexity, beautifully polished with substantial structure. The wine’s depth and fine tannins reflect the attributes of our spectacular site. This Cabernet Sauvignon-led, Bordeaux blend is aged up to 21 months in new Taransaud French oak barrels to heighten complexity and deepen aromas. Over its releases, this wine has reaped raving reviews from renowned wine critics and experts.

For optimum enjoyment of this wine, please decant and serve at about 60 ºF.

The 2021 Roy Estate Mr. Evans exults with extremely generous aromatics of vibrant red fruits—currant, plum—at the fore. This finely calibrated tension between energy and decadence results from the dynamic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot planted on the benchland vineyard blocks at the foot of the Roy Estate site. Deeper notes of black licorice then take hold, integrating flawlessly with warm, luxurious tones of toasted brioche and exotic hardwood.

The rich loam soils of those lower Roy Estate vineyard blocks carry into the glass with an ethereal minerality. The overall impression is one of great finesse, where the wine’s arresting aromatics give rise to a finely crafted, indulgent core and an eminently graceful finish. Just as the vineyard continues to yield wines of ever-greater intensity as it matures, this Grand Cru will develop and improve over the next 20 years.

For optimum enjoyment of this wine, please decant and serve at about 60 ºF.

The 2019 Roy Estate Mr. Evans is a rich expression of our single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon that achieves great finesse. The wine opens with a lively bouquet of concentrated red berries and graphite. There is layered depth and resonance here, as these ripe fruit and mineral tones transform to evoke exotic spices like anise, mace and licorice. The perfect addition of our Merlot and Petit Verdot brings superlative balance to this Grand Cru, showcasing the uniqueness of the Roy Estate terroir. While the wine’s confident swagger is undeniable, the elegance that is the perennial signature of the Roy Estate site is also present. Fresh fennel, wildflowers and menthol energize the wine and invigorate the palate. This noteworthy complexity and arresting freshness become apparent the more time the 2019 Mr. Evans spends in the glass. Robust, finely wrought tannins frame out the wine’s commanding structure and underscore its lingering finish. A Grand Cru of true substance, it will cellar and evolve for at least 20 years.

The 2018 Roy Estate Mr. Evans Proprietary Red is a superbly balanced wine that perfectly reflects the elegance of the 2018 growing season. It offers a dazzling bouquet of ripe black plum complemented by the freshness of currant and cranberry. Beneath this generous fruit is a savory quality evoking mountain herbs, sage and cedar. Crafted primarily from Roy Estate’s single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon with small additions of Merlot and Petit Verdot, the wine is unapologetically dense and lush. Yet despite its substantial presence in the glass, the 2018 Roy Estate Mr. Evans possesses ample acidity and pronounced, well-calibrated tannins that lend the wine noteworthy tension.

A wine of many layers and superlative refinement, its lengthy finish suggests toffee, cocoa nibs and warm spices owing to 19 months spent in 100% new French oak. The wine is highly approachable today and will achieve even greater complexity over the next 15 years.

For optimum enjoyment of this wine, please decant and serve at about 60 °F.

The 2017 Mr. Evans Proprietary Red immediately offers its signature, exhilarating bouquet of vibrant red and black fruit. Yet in 2017, the iconic Roy Estate blend also presents a captivating savory quality evoking forest floor and black truffles. On the palate, the wine’s structure is an homage to classic Bordeaux—firm, textural and layered. It quickly builds an intense, dark core of blackberry, blueberry and creme de cassis. The notable acidity in the 2017 vintage makes this full-bodied wine exceptionally balanced with a lingering, lively finish.

This is an energetic, powerful wine tempered by graceful tannins and its time spent in 100% new French oak barrels. It drinks beautifully now and will improve through 2035 and beyond.

This opulent 2012 Proprietary Red immediately seduces the senses with a smoky, dark cherry impression that opens to reveal intense, ripe boysenberry, mixed wild berry and plum aromas. It delivers on many different levels, a true expression of both the vintage and Roy Estate. On the palate, masculine notes of black pepper, flint, dark chocolate and black tea are combined with an alluring hint of clove and French oak derived vanilla characteristics harmoniously bringing great richness, texture and depth. The finish is lengthy with fine tannins and a beautifully polished texture.

The Roy Estate vineyard produced two solid wines in 2011. From a very difficult and challenging winemaking vintage the extremely low yields produced Roy’s signature aromatics with purity of flavor, depth, and finesse. This wine fills the glass with dense rich fruit aromas of raspberries, dark blackberries, rose petal, chocolate, sage, mint and anise. Bright notes of French vanilla, mocha and caramel explode from the glass, adding many levels of complexity to the intriguing fruit aromas. It exhibits those approachable soft rounded tannins with a silky integration of great layers, richness and depth with that wonderful long, lingering finish. Another beautiful expression of Roy Estate.

The nose reveals finesse and extremely pretty aromatics of blueberry, wild berry, blackberry, mocha, espresso and violet. The mouthfeel has great focus, but in a very seductive style. Layered with creamy sweet exotic flavors, dark chocolate, sweet black cherry and flowers reminiscent of good acidity, this wine finishes with great length and sexy powerful tannins. The oak integration is spectacular, which is great sign for quality. The classic Roy Estate terroir truly expresses her voice as the wine opens and continues to evolve in the glass. The elegance of flavors melts into your palate with ripe fruit characters, earthy tones and freshness, followed by a pleasuring measure of finesse.

The extreme low yields in 2009 provided ripe grapes of huge concentration in flavors and structure. This Proprietary Red reveals deep red color and the intense aromatics are terrific like perfume with fresh cassis, cherry, blueberries and a hint of pepper. It delivers purity of flavor, richness and depth with finesse. Well rounded in the mouth, it exhibits plenty of vibrancy and charms with a wonderful bouquet of violet, fresh crushed rocks, blue and black fruits and exotic spices. Lingering on your palate with a very long, beautiful finish of fruits, it shows great promises for long aging ability.

From the estate, the very low yield of 2008 helped produce this remarkable, concentrated and sophisticated wine. Making wines since 2005, this site continues to amaze my palate by its finesse, purity of flavor, depth and European style. The powerful nose of rose petal, violet, sweet cherry, scorched earth and spices is extremely inviting. The mouthfeel is muscular and concentrated with layers of polished and fresh flavors of black and red cherry, black currant, forest scents, and chocolate finishing with refined tannins. This complex wine is beautiful now and will continue to engage and evolve.

From this exceptional vintage, the Merlots of late September and Cabernets the third week of October were picked under perfect conditions. Rich and layered, the wine is made distinctive by its aromatic complexity of rich and ripe-red berries, spicy vanilla, black cherry and tobacco, followed by hints of black tea and mineral notes; the mouthfeel is refined and sophisticated with tremendous length. Complex and harmonious, this amazing wine enthralls the palate with a seamless core of fruit and integrated tannins. Full of energy, the wine will have a very long life. It has good acidity (the grapes ripened under cooler weather conditions), intense color/flavors (volcanic soil) and soft and sweet tannins (balanced vines and low yields). The 2005 Proprietary Red Wine expresses flavors of blackberry, licorice, espresso beans and Asian spices. Lush and rich in the attack, the wine carries on with harmony and depth finishing with ripe, soft tannins and aromas of black tea, bacon, smoke and licorice. It’s tasting great right now.
